*Note* Because it would cause spoilers for the novel, not much will be stated about Mathias here. One will have to learn through reading the novels.

Mathias was considered a giant among the men he worked with. His size was nearly unheard of during the time that he was born. After being born, his mother died, and his father blamed him for her death. She had given birth to six other children, and it was Mathias that had killed her.

He was soon in the military at a young age, and became a man of high standing among the military. Even knowing many powerful leaders of the time. After a tradgic event, which will not be stated here. He found himself saddened and unable to work as he previously had. He fell ill, and soon found himself nothing more then an advisor. No longer the brave warrior he once was.

This was when Tzion entered his life. A man who his lord was asking money from, bumped into him in the halls. Tzion was impressed with Mathias size, and continued to return to him. He listened to his stories and and Tzion to his. They had a friendship, but one that only Tzion enjoyed. Mathias felt the man was strange, and hiding something. He discovered the secret too late.

In the cloak of darkness, Mathias was pulled from his bedroom by men he would normaly crush. Yet, they were to strong and quick. He was put before Tzion in his great hall. It was here, that he came into contact with the truth.

Tzion showed Mathias what he really was, by feeding from a young man. He explained the world of vampire to him. Mathias called out to his gods, and begged to be foregiven for all he had done. He was told by his future master, that his gods would not save him now. His life was taken that evening, on the cold stone floor.

He awoke, no longer weak, no longer ill. The first taste of immortality was truly sweet, but the bitterness would come eventually. Tzion hated his peon, and Mathias soon found that his master had been ordered to create him. His master picked young, impressionable minds to slave under him. Mathias understood why, when on numerous occasions, he saw the young men leaving Tzion's room at early hours of the morning.

He did not hold his master's sexual preferences against him. Tzion taught him much, and had pulled him from the clutch of death. It was Tzion's hate for Mathias, that brought the bitterness between them. He lied and betrayed him, forcing him to kill a bowery that was once his wife, and then again a young man who he had grown found of.

Soon after Mathias left Tzion's grasp, and ventured off onto his own. To wait for the birth of Kailin, to protect, and guard her as he was ordered to do by Eva.
